It was a bright, sunny, Saturday afternoon. The sort of day that would draw most kids outside to enjoy the sunshine and freedom. Alina loved the sunlight, even if she couldn't see it, and spent every moment she could outside. Except for today. Today, she sat in a dark corner of a classroom, curled up in the fetal position as she cried. She held her hand to her chest, trembling as pain seared through it. She'd fallen behind on the reading in DADA and as a result, Umbridge had given her detention Friday night.
At first, Alina didn't think it was so bad, having to write lines. Umbridge even had a special quill for it. But her feelings quickly dissipated as she began writing. Tino whispered in her ear, telling her where the Braille dots were being placed, helping her spell out the words correctly. The moment she started writing, it felt like there were pins pricking the back of her hand with each stroke of the quill. She couldn't figure out what was going on, but decided to continue. Before the night was out, it was all she could do to keep from crying in pain.
She had hoped that it would all go away once she got some rest, but it had been worse in the morning as her skin tried to recover from it. Most children would just have a mild ache in their hand, something they could work through. But Alina needed her hands for everything. They were the most sensitive thing she had to find her way with. Destroy her hand, and she's left with just a bird on her shoulder. She couldn't go to the nurse, it wouldn't help, she knew that much. So all she could do was hide and pray for the pain to stop. As she sat there, she ran her hand over the sentence again and again. 'I must finish what I start.'

After waking that morning, Pansy had become fed up with her roommates, even though they were the closest thing she had to friends, and stormed out of the common room and into the corridors of the dungeon. Being down in a place where there were no windows to be found, she had no idea what a bright and cheerful day it was until she arrived on the first floor. Glaring at the sunshine, as it completely clashed with her dark and dismal mood, Pansy entered the Great Hall and ate her breakfast in silence, scaring any people who dared to take a seat next to her away.
Feeling a little better after eating, Pansy decided to take a walk around the castle. Perhaps there was some trouble to get into, or maybe a deserted windowsill where she could sit and think at. Ascending the first staircase, Pansy sent a little head nod to two Slytherins who were coming down from above. The younger snakes send small smug looks towards her as they continued on their way. When she reached the first floor landing, she saw a second year - perhaps Gryffindor or Ravenclaw - picking up a couple books they had dropped. Smiling lightly, for she now knew what the looks were about, Pansy continued up another flight of stairs.
Striding down the second floor hallways, Pansy shoved her hands into the pockets of her dark wash jeans and listened for anyone around. Her ears picked up a muffled noise as she moved by one of the classrooms and she stopped and listened to try and pinpoint where it was coming from. Straining her ears over the sounds of people milling about on the grounds below, Pansy heard it come from the Transfiguration room. Walking over to her favorite classroom, she peeked her head around the door and looked around the room, trying to deduce what, or who, was making the noise.
Her eyes immediately fell upon a small girl - a first year by the looks of things - and Pansy saw that she was crying and clutching her hand. Her features lifted into a sneer. She hated crying herself and felt no pity for people that cried, whether alone or in public. It was a sign of weakness and every smart person knows that to let your enemies know your weaknesses was the same as handing them the keys to the city. “Don’t you have any decency? Crying - what a pathetic show of emotions.” Her voice held tones of contempt and scorn. Pansy had no pity for anyone - friend or foe.

Tino trilled a little, trying to console her as she cried. He was so enveloped in trying to care for her that he didn't even notice as the door opened and the both jumped in surprise as someone spoke. Alina jumped in surprise and lift her head to the light. In the light, Pansy would be able to see that she was blind. Alina trembled a little as she sat there, speaking after a moment.
"Wh-wh-who's there? What do you want?"
She curled up a little more, wiping her eyes. She didn't like the sound of that voice and Tino's whisper proved it. This person was a Slytherin, a prefect for that matter by the badge. Alina was in trouble now, Slytherins typically hated Hufflepuffs, and first years more so. So First Year Hufflepuffs were in even more trouble. She pushed herself a little farther back into the corner, trying to get away from the girl.

Pansy observed the girl as she jumped in fright of being surprised. Rolling her eyes, Pansy leant against the door frame and crossed her arms over her chest. Just as you don’t show weakness to an enemy, one should never be so engrossed in what they are doing - being it crying or talking - to not notice people coming up to them. To be aware of your surroundings gave you an edge, especially if one was in a magical battle. Her eyes narrowed as she caught sight of a bird perched near the girl. Since when had Hogwarts allowed birds besides owls be pets? Not that she cared too much for the rules…
Seeing the small girl lift her head, the light streaming through the room illuminated her face. So the girl is blind, huh? Explains the bird. Although showing no outside expression as to the news, Pansy smirked inside. This girl was even easier to belittle than most would be. She heard the timid voice of the girl and rolled her eyes again, did this girl try to be easy to pick on? Within the first three minutes of being in the same presence as Pansy, she had revealed that she cried, could be startled, and was obviously afraid of her. A deadly combination when facing the fifth-year Queen of Slytherin.
“Who am I?” Pansy chuckled, a dark and cruel sound that had an edge as sharp as a cutlass. “That is none of your concern, little first-year.” Yeah, like she was actually going to exchange names with a person of little stature, and certainly not of the house of snakes. Her voice was as mocking as it was cold. If the girl could see, she would be able to see a dangerous glint in Pansy’s eyes. She was notorious throughout Hogwarts, and was miffed that this small girl hadn’t heard of her yet.
“I suppose trouble, that’s what I was looking for after all. Though I think standing here talking to you will quell my boredom, as well as provide entertainment for awhile.” Smirking at the girl, Pansy proceeded to walk closer to her and sat in a seat not too far away from where she was curled into a ball on the floor. Watching the girl curl up even further, Pansy’s smirk widened. This was going to be fun.

Justin was sat in the Ravenclaw Common Room, replaying the events that had transpired just before his return to Hogwarts this year. His ancestor, one of the Founders for this school, Rowena Ravenclaw, had told him to help Harry Potter defeat the Dark Lord but the trouble was, Justin didn’t exactly know how he’d be of help. He didn’t speak to Harry and his friends that much, and he didn’t exactly want to go up to them and say, ‘Hey, I'm Rowena’s descendant and I'm here to help’. It would probably sound stupid. Sighing, Justin made his way to the Great Hall with the other Ravenclaws and had breakfast.
Usually, breakfast was a time for Justin to talk to friends and catch-up with any unfinished homework but today Justin had luckily finished all his homework and had it piled up in his room, waiting to be handed in. Plus, Justin wasn’t feeling very chatty today. He would need to speak to Karlee about this at some point. He’d kept this hidden from her since he had returned to Hogwarts.
Once breakfast was done with, before Karlee could come to him Justin left the Great Hall for stroll around the school for a bit. His wand was always with him no matter where he went – it felt right. He then heard voices. One was unfamiliar to him whilst the other he knew very well, making his brows deepen in fury. Slytherins were such a nuisance at the best of times. He quickly went to where the Slytherin girl’s voice was and looked for a minute before going in.
“Bullying again, Pansy?”

She trembled as the girl spoke. Her voice was so terrifyingly cold... Alina had never heard such coldness. Then Pansy mentioned entertainment and she suppressed a whimper, holding Tino close as the bird hissed defiantly at the snake sitting near them. His feathers ruffled up, making him look bigger and slightly more intimidating. Slightly. Alina swallowed nervously and squeezed her eyes shut, hoping someone would come help her. She couldn't fight this girl, not with her hand being the way it was. Her salvation came when another person entered the room and spoke to Pansy, announcing her name. Now Alina knew who to avoid. She pulled her wand out with a weak, shaky hand. Tino whispered silently to Alina, but as she tried to hold the wand in a way that she could feel the magic, she whimpered and dropped it, holding her hand in pain. She couldn't defend herself. This boy had to do it.
"Help... please..."

Raising an eyebrow as the bird rose up from it’s small enough height to try and intimidate her. It would have been terrifying if Pansy was about as small as a mouse. Fortunately for her, she stood at five foot five, and the bird couldn’t have scared her even if it tried as hard as it could. Pansy chuckled at the thought of this bird being scary. “Your bird is delusional, you know that? Thinking it could scare me…what a stupid thought.” Drawing her wand from her pocket she turned it between her fingers, a cruel smile overcoming her face. “I think he could use a change, don’t you? Perhaps he could become a toad instead of a bird - or better yet, a neon pink bird - wouldn’t that be just great?”
How fun would that be? For one, she’d get to practice her transfiguration on a living bird, but this girl was making it too easy. Watching as she herself drew her wand, Pansy’s hands stilled on her wand. This girl wasn’t seriously thinking of attacking her, was she? Not that she stood a chance against a fifth year, even if Pansy wasn’t the best student to come through Hogwarts. Hearing the clattering of the wand hitting the floor, Pansy was snapped out of her musings and let out a peal of laughter. “Dropping your wand? How feeble. You would be useless in battle.”
Turning at the sound of another voice, Pansy’s smirk, which had begun to fade, came back in full blast. “Well, the good times just keep on rolling. Come to play the hero yet again, Justin?” Pansy had heard a full account of the little skirmish that occurred between Justin, some Gryffindor chick, and another young Gyffindor from Draco, and wasn’t in the least bit scared of this kid. Placing a hand over her heart, Pansy wiped the smirk off her face and tried to rearrange her face into a hurt look, a difficult feat for her. “You hurt me, Grant. We were just chatting, isn’t that right, girl?” At hearing her whispered plea for help, Pansy’s eyes narrowed. “What is it? Can’t you even stand up for yourself, or do you need people to do it for you?”

Justin didn’t respond to Pansy, he didn’t need to. She was an idiot who was Draco’s girlfriend. Malfoy had probably exaggerated Justin’s poor wand skills, which in Justin’s mind were only that poor due to the lack of training he had recently done. Rowena’s Descendant looked to the girl and saw that she was blind, making Justin angry. Like before Justin got his wand out and pointed it at Pansy. How dare she attack a First Year girl who was blind! Then he saw the bird and surmised that the bird was her eyes. Besides, she may not have been sent here if her parents hadn’t wanted her to attend.
“Why don’t you run along and play couple with Malfoy, Parkinson?” said Justin, his face hardening. Ok, so maybe he shouldn’t stereotype the Houses but seriously, when members of a certain House behaved a certain way it was hard not to stereotype. There may be some nicer Slytherins but Justin hadn’t seen any so far. When he saw a nicer Slytherin then he would retract his stereotyping but until then, he wouldn’t. The girl’s hand was hurt. He knew she wouldn’t openly seek duals, she didn’t seem that type of girl. One answer came to mind: Umbridge. Justin gritted his teeth in anger. Another person he detested. A spell came to mind and Justin grinned at Pansy. He wasn’t in the mood to be dealing with an annoying Slytherin girl.
“I'm really not in the mood, Parkinson, so Depulso!”

She held Tino close as he settled down and leaned into her. She stroked his feathers with a shaky hand, then whimpered and covered him as Pansy threatened to change him.
"No, please don't!"
She whined and curled up as Pansy mocked her for dropping her wand. She bit her lip and held her wand hand in pain. Why did she have to use the other hand to write the lines? She'd always used a special spell to write her assignments, the words just appearing as she whispered them. But Umbridge forced her to use the quill and she just didn't know which hand to use. Now she could barely even read her assignments.
She listened to the exchange between Justin and Pansy, deciding to keep quiet. When he cast the spell, she took the opportunity and lurched to her feet, running towards the door and away from Pansy. But she was moving too fast and Tino was too far away from her ear and as she reached the end of the aisle, she turned too soon and ran headlong into a desk. She yelped in pain and fell to the floor, holding her knee in pain as Tino fluttered in the air over her, making noise to get Justin's attention.

“Well, since you asked nicely, and the fact that I’m in a good mood, I’ll spare your bird today.” A cruel smirk took over her features. “Just make sure not to come near me with that creature on a bad day, or you might just be talking to a toad for a little while.” Although it would bring her great enjoyment to see the bird turned into a toad for a little while, she wouldn’t waste her time on this insignificant girl and her stupid bird. Besides, Pansy wasn’t in the mood to weave a story that would fool any teacher into believing that the whole incident was an accident, she had already had to do that once this week.
“Please, Draco is off doing his own thing, and besides, I’m having much more fun sitting here chatting it up with you guys.” At hearing Justin call her by her last name once again, Pansy raised an eyebrow. “I do have a first name, you know. Unless it’s too hard for you to pronounce, which I would totally understand, ‘cause I get the fact that you’re not the brightest bulb in the box…” To her, this information was obvious. From what she had heard, none of his spells achieved any results while the spell the Gryffindor girl shot managed to knock Draco off his feet.
“Protego!” A magical shield appeared in front of Pansy and the spell he sent toward her was deflected off of it. Still holding her wand at the ready, Pansy laughed again. “You really are an impulsive fool, aren’t you? Tell me, do you always draw your wand against anyone you happen to find on a Saturday?” Lowering her wand, though her muscles remained tense, waiting for a second attack, she backed up until she hit the wall and leaned up against it, relaxing and looking smug about the whole affair.
Watching the girl stand up and run towards the Ravenclaw, away from her, Pansy almost felt bad when she ran into a table. Almost. Then, like some Slytherins would have done, she burst out in a fit of laughter. “Better watch where you’re going…oops, sorry…kinda forgot about your condition for a moment.” Barely containing her amused look, her face almost spread into a smile.

Justin ignored Pansy’s snide remark. He really didn’t think he should stoop to her level but her next comment struck a nerve. He then gave a small bitchy smile. Just because she and Malfoy blocked a few spells did not mean that they should start boasting. There were far better duellers at the school than they. Malfoy and Parkinson were arrogant dumbos that needed to be taught a lesson at some point.
“Only to those who are doing nothing but tormenting students who don’t deserve it,” said Justin, who was then alerted by the cockatiel. Oh, the poor girl. Pansy was a real cow at times. He rushed over to her, going to his knees. He then checked to see if there were any signs of injury. Thankfully, she wasn’t injured that badly so he just did some minor healing spell on her. He then helped her up.
“Parkinson, go shove yourself up your own arrogant bloody arse!” said Justin. He then turned to Alina. “Come on, why don’t we go to the library? Or I can show you some defensive spells if you like.”

Alina lay on the floor, biting her lip as she held her knee. There was a bleeding cut just above the bone, but it wasn't too bad. He cast the spell to heal it and she stood, holding his arm like it was a lifeline. He offered to take her to the library and at first she nodded, but Tino landed on her shoulder and urgently whispered something in her ear. She gasped and tugged on Justin's sleeve.
"I forgot my wand!"
It was an urgent whisper, hoping Pansy wouldn't hear. If the Slytherin heard that a first year's wand had been left on the floor, she could very easily grab it and hide it somewhere, or worse, break it. Alina didn't want her wand broken, she didn't want to go home because of that.

“Tormenting? What harsh words, Justin. I was merely socializing with my peers, and that certainly does not merit such cruel language, especially to a prefect. Wouldn’t want to get in trouble, would we?” Pansy sent him an amused look. “Or maybe taking 25 points from Ravenclaw will be enough to set you back in your place, right?” Who ever said she played fair? As far as she was concerned, this kid had no right to talk to her that way and wouldn’t hesitate to keep deducting points if need be.
Pansy chuckled darkly again as Justin had his little temper tantrum, the words directed towards her. “Hit a nerve, did I? Sorry I hurt your delicate feelings - would you like me to call your mommy for you?” Stupid Ravenclaw. He obviously didn’t understand what to do around an enemy either. If the younger girl thought he was a knight in shining armor, then she had some serious brain damage. Grant was the farthest thing from that; a chimney sweep in holey rags. He had yet to hurt her, and his spell didn’t even work. A pathetic attempt, really.
“Running away - ha! What cowards, can’t even stand to be in the same room as me. You’re both weak, spineless, sorry excuses for wizards. I pity whomever you call your friends - that is, if you have any, which I guess the answer to that question would be a no.” Teach that girl defensive spells? It didn’t look like she could lift her hand, never mind use magic. In any case - her hand injured or not - Pansy bet that the girl wouldn’t even be able to complete the simplest defensive spells. She was just so weak and naïve.
Noticing the forgotten wand on the floor, Pansy smirked cruely and levitated it over to herself, catching it and twirling it between her fingers. “How juvenile and stupid. Forgetting your wand? It’s almost like forgetting to change out of your bunny slippers in the morning, though, I suppose you forget things a lot, don’t you?” The wand was nothing special, as far as she could tell, and Pansy ended up holding her own wand in one hand, and the girl's in her other hand.

For the most part Justin ignored Pansy. She could take twenty-five points from Ravenclaw if she wanted. They would always get it back anyway. Just as he was about to take the young girl away she whispered that she had forgot her wand, and sure enough she had. The young Ravenclaw turned to see the Slytherin Prefect holding the girl’s wand. Ugh, how he hated Slytherins at the best of times. He let her finished her stupid taunting – she’d hopefully go soon, or not. He quickly looked to the girl beside him. Poor girl – she was being picked on by one of the Slytherin Prefects. Justin was glad that Malfoy wasn’t here. that would have been very bad.
Justin straightened up and looked at Pansy dead on. “Give the wand back, Pansy.” If she broke the girl’s wand no doubt he and the Professors would be furious if she broke a fellow student’s wand. There was no excuse for breaking another student’s wand, no excuse at all. Justin now felt stupid as he knew Pansy wouldn’t just give it back but decided to let that one slide. It wasn’t worth getting into a childish argument with someone like Pansy.
“Stay close to me, you’ll be fine. Pansy, don’t you have Prefect duties? Professor Snape wouldn’t like you missing out on those, would he?” Justin hoped that the mention of Snape would make her falter. He was her Head of House after all, unless she was so foolish as to not fear him. If she did break the poor girl’s wand then she would answer to any of the Head of Houses.

Alina whined a little as Pans picked her wand up. Trembling, she clung to Justin's arm as he tried to get Pansy to drop the wand. Tino whispered to her, telling her what Pansy was doing. Alina trembled as he tried to frighten her into giving the wand back. She lift her head a little as he mentioned Snape and she trembled a little at the thought of that man. Just his voice was enough to terrify her, even if he wasn't the head of Slytherin. She lift her head, listening for Pansy's reaction. Then she got an idea and turned to Tino, whispering to him. The bird immediately jumped from her shoulder and flew out the window.
